Is Dr. Tony Holohan taking the Irish people for granted?

As you all probably know, the tsunami that is Covid-19 has been belting at Irish shores for a few weeks at this stage. Fortunately, we seem to be managing the outbreak reasonably well, despite the tragic loss of over two hundred people to the virus. We can however take hope that this could have been much, much worse: by last Tuesday, we were predicted to have 15,000 confirmed cases, but a week later we have not even reached 40% of that figure, and at the present growth rate, we will reach 15,000 in just under two weeks. If the rate continues to fall, we may not even reach 15,000 confirmed cases at all (though in all probability we most likely will if we have not already done so). Nevertheless, we must continue to keep up our efforts to ensure that will be the case. That's the good news. The Ana Kriegel case and the elephant in the room.

The harrowing case of the murder of Anastasia Kriegel, for which two teenagers have now been brought to justice, for me really hammered home the profoundly damaging effects that pornography has had on young people in our society. How could a young woman with her whole life ahead of her could meet her death in such a grisly and horrendous fashion, through no fault of her own? And how could two young men, again with their whole lives ahead of them, basically throw it all away in a mindless pursuit of perverted sexual pleasure? I suspect that the possible answers to these questions will upset people on all sides of the political spectrum. One such answer is that our society seems to endorse the view that sexual impulses, because they are natural, are therefore always good and that to seek to suppress them, or to say that these impulses should only be acted on in a marriage between a man and a woman who are open to new life, is not merely eccentric, but actually psychopathic. Is Ireland the New Babylon?

" By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down Yeah, we wept, when we remembered Zion " I find Boney M's lyrics increasingly resonant since the loss of the Eighth Amendment last year, and more recently the introduction of abortion into Northern Ireland amid the impasse at Stormont. There is no doubt that for social conservatives like myself, we are living in what seems to be a foreign country where much like the Israelites in Babylon, we are looked down on with contempt by the supposedly civilised natives. The analogy is only strengthened when one considers what a shock it was to the Israelites initially that such a predicament was even thinkable, let alone that it happened.  Similarly, nobody in Ireland, on either side, was prepared for the sheer margin of the defeat last May.
